What is Telecom?

Telecommunications, also known as telecommunications, is the exchange of information over great distances by electronic means and refers to all types of voice, data, and video transmission. It is a broad term that includes a wide range of information transmission technologies and communication infrastructure, such as wired telephones; mobile devices such as cell phones; microwave communications; optical fiber; satellites; radio and television broadcasting; the Internet; and telegraph.

 

A complete single telecommunications circuit consists of two stations, each equipped with a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter and receiver at any station can be combined into a device called a transceiver. The medium for signal transmission can be through wires or cables (also known as copper), optical fibers, electromagnetic fields, or light. The use of electromagnetic fields to transmit and receive data in free space is called wireless communication.
